Comprehensive exams and treatments for a variety of conditions.

When you come in for your initial visit to the Better Breathing Center, Dr. Gary Reinheimer will review your health history and conduct one of the most thorough allergy evaluations you will ever have. In addition to looking at your symptoms and how long you’ve been suffering, Dr. Reinheimer’s in-depth investigation includes things you might not associate with your condition. These include sleep habits, medications, diet and various medical conditions. He will also ask about your previous treatments and their results. This comprehensive evaluation is then followed by specialized tests to help Dr. Reinheimer create a detailed treatment plan by the end of your visit.

Welcome relief from your toughest allergies.

Allergies are the result of a response by your body’s immune system to agents it perceives as not belonging there. Your immune system is always working to fight germs, viruses and other foreign agents that can harm your body. However, sometimes your body’s immune system overreacts when a harmless foreign agent called an allergen enters the body. This overreaction is called an allergic reaction.

To pinpoint the cause of your allergies, Dr. Reinheimer uses universally accepted skin tests and intradermal testing. He will recommend the appropriate test based on your symptoms and even provide you with the results during the same office visit. That way your treatment can begin immediately. Dr. Reinheimer can provide welcome relief from all types of allergies.

Dr. Reinheimer always works with the most conservative allergy treatment methods first, such as:

  • Recognition & avoidance counseling
  • Food elimination/diet counseling
  • Advanced allergy medications

When appropriate Dr. Reinheimer will recommend an allergy shots to relieve your symptoms.

Solutions to keep your asthma under control.

Symptoms of asthma include periodic wheezing, coughing, chest tightness and breathing difficulty. While the cause of asthma is often unknown, there are many identifiable triggers that can contribute to its signs and symptoms. These include respiratory infections, exercise, cold air, stress and exposure to pollen, mold, spores, odors, smoke, animal dander and dust mites. Asthma attacks can last minutes to hours or even days. While some attacks are mild, others can be life-threatening if airflow is severely obstructed.

To diagnose asthma, Dr. Reinheimer looks at your health history, tests and/or pulmonary function testing. If your symptoms and breathing tests do not clearly establish a diagnosis of asthma, additional tests may be needed, such as a methacholine challenge.

Once Dr. Reinheimer diagnoses your asthma, he will develop an individualized treatment plan designed to get you on the road to good health right away. He starts with conservative approaches, including:

  • Preventive measures
  • Trigger avoidance
  • Activity & lifestyle modification
  • Medical management/inhaler treatment

When appropriate Dr. Reinheimer will recommend an allergy shots to relieve your symptoms.

Clearing up sinus problems & chronic cough.

With his advanced training in allergy, asthma and immune disorders, Dr. Reinheimer is naturally well-suited to diagnose a whole host of conditions, including:

  • Sinus problems
  • Sinus headaches
  • Chronic nasal congestion
  • Postnasal drip
  • Chronic cough

Since the respiratory tract is “one system,” any disease or condition affecting the nose and sinuses can also affect the larynx, trachea and lungs, and vice versa. For example, a chronic cough can be the result of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD).

To pinpoint the cause of your sinus condition, Dr. Reinheimer will conduct a complete exam and may recommend a CT scan of the sinuses.

If your condition warrants care from an ENT physician, pulmonologist, gastroenterologist or other specialist, Dr. Reinheimer will refer you, plus provide them with a written report of his findings.

COPD

Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) is an irreversible lung condition which causes swelling of the airways in the lungs, which blocks the flow of air.  Symptoms of COPD include shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing, and a decreased ability to do the things you once loved.  Emphysema and chronic bronchitis are common forms of COPD.  Cigarette smoking is often a main cause of COPD.

Dr. Reinheimer takes a comprehensive approach to accurately diagnose and help treat and alleviate the symptoms of COPD.  This includes a detailed health history and physical examination and may include lung X-ray and lung function and breathing tests. Once the condition is properly diagnosed, Dr. Reinheimer will determine the best course of treatment, whether lung rehabilitation therapy, medications or oxygen to help improve your symptoms.

COPD is a chronic condition, meaning it stays with you a long time and unfortunately can get worse over time. It is important to recognize the signs of exacerbation. Many people with COPD periodically experience a worsening of their COPD symptoms. This can last for a few days and often requires antibiotics, oral steroids, and sometimes, hospitalization. Dr. Reinheimer is ready to help you get through these difficult episodes.

CHRONIC COUGH

For an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment, look to Dr. Gary Reinheimer.

WHY DO WE COUGH?

Coughing is a normal protective reflex that defends your respiratory system against irritants. It clears unwanted mucous or phlegm from the breathing tubes and removes potentially harmful particles such as dust. However, a forceful or persistent cough can be painful and bothersome and interrupt your daily life. A chronic cough is one that lasts longer than four weeks, and it can present you with a whole host of symptoms, including:

  • Chest pain
  • Musculoskeletal pain
  • Fatigue
  • Sorethroat/hoarseness
  • Vomiting
  • Loss of sleep
  • Urinary incontinence

Dr. Gary Reinheimer has made the diagnosis and treatment of chronic cough one of the cornerstones of his practice. He’s a board-certified allergist and immunologist who can determine if your chronic cough is the result of underlying problems that you might not know you have.

DIAGNOSING CHRONIC COUGH.

Although a regular exam can help determine the cause of a cough, proactive physicians refer their patients to an allergist-immunologist for additional tests, particularly if a cough does not improve after the usual causes are ruled out.

Dr. Reinheimer takes a comprehensive approach to accurately diagnose the cause of your chronic cough. This includes a detailed health history and physical examination and may include allergy testing, lung X-ray, lung function tests and, if necessary, a CT scan of the sinuses. After reviewing the results of your tests, Dr. Reinheimer will develop a treatment plan based on your individual condition.

CAUSES OF CHRONIC COUGH.

There are many common causes of chronic cough, all of which Dr. Reinheimer can diagnose:

Postnasal drip — This is an overproduction of mucus that slowly trickles from the back of your nose down into your throat. Postnasal drip may have many causes.
Chronic sinus problems — These occur when the sinus passages become swollen, causing obstruction of the sinus cavities and preventing normal drainage.
Asthma — This chronic disease of the airways and lungs inflames and constricts the air passages.
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) — This condition is characterized by a backup of stomach acid into your esophagus.
Medications — Coughing may result from certain medications prescribed for high blood pressure and heart disease.

While none of the most common causes of chronic cough are life-threatening, some uncommon causes warrant immediate, highly specialized care. These include lung cancer, laryngeal cancer, throat cancer, congestive heart failure, pulmonary disease, lung disease and abnormal heart rhythm. For these cases, Dr. Reinheimer will refer patients to the appropriate specialist and provide them with a written report of his findings. This physician-to-physician collaboration ensures the most efficient and timely patient care possible.
